If you are like me I am sure you get messages all the time about clever ways to spread your messages out on the World Wide Web. You will also sadly probably receive lots of spammy messages that ask you do this that to get the most out of twitter and the occasional one on Linked-in. However, a good idea for spreading awareness across a social network is “Pay with a tweet” which is basically an idea that you get something free if you tweet about it on your own account. It sounds a bit spammy I grant you but when you consider you are giving something away for something that takes 2 seconds I don’t think it ...

A huge PR opportunity opens as tweets, votes and social media signals are confirmed to boost search rankings
So last week I attended a meeting down in Kent with a very senior SEO expert (who shall remain nameless) but who runs a large digital team. He called me and my colleagues in to discuss the possibility of helping them create some interesting and engaging online campaigns. I am always interested when I meet senior people from the SEO world as they often have a different take on things to us public relations types and I find it kind of refreshing to talk about the more geeky side of digital. I asked him how important he now felt social media was now on search. I told him that in the PR industry we have known for a long ...

So the social network juggernaut that is Facebook took another step forward with its face recognition software for photographs this week. Basically the new Tag Suggestions feature scans photos and automatically picks out existing friends by guessing them asking you if you would like to tag them. Now this feature would sound pretty good if you were told about it and asked if you wanted to use it? Sadly, although Facebook is all about being social it still seems to forget how to announce these new features to us. In its defence when the feature was launched in the US at the back end of last year Facebook did notify its users but it didn’t over ...

On Wednesday I attended the Social Network Debate which was held by my good friends Lucre Social and the topic we had up for discussion this time was “Are social networks are a distraction for marketeers?” There were a lot of senior marketers and PR people in the room from brands like the BBC, Groupon, Intel and Videojug. PR Week was also in attendance and one of the panel members was John Morter who famously took on X-factor mogul Simon Cowell in 2009 with his rage against the machine campaign. I found his insights particularly interesting as he had a very different view to most people. The debate raged on and it seemed that although many people did ...

Warning this is a self-promotional post from someone who is pretty happy! I have just got back to work today after seven beautifully sunny days in Kos with my family and after going through the obligatory work related emails I stumbled across a number of tweets congratulating me on my position in the Brand Republic Top Marketing Blogs. In case you didn’t know the BR 200 is a list of (it’s description): “The best advertising, marketing, media, PR and digital blogs from around the world, ranked in terms of traffic and ...

Please excuse me if this is a bit of a rant but I felt the need to get it out of my system once and for all. You would have to have been hidden under an extremely large rock this week to miss the story about a twitter user revealing the details of celebrity super injunctions on Twitter. In fact, it even made the 10’o clock news last night and my first thought was why? Various people confirmed on Twitter last week the details of the married footballer – in ...

So Tweetdeck is reportedly selling its platform to Twitter for $50million. I think this is a really positive sign for both Twitter, and UK entrepreneurs in general, as too often it is the US Silicon Valley-based businesses that manage to secure all of the large backing. We have some truly brilliant minds in this country and this proves it. Tweetdeck, is a brilliant platform which has been developed by people in this country. It is a great tool that allows heavy Twitter users like me to update more than 20 ...

This is PROBABLY the coolest video I have seen in a long time. This video has been filmed to help reposition the Carlsberg brand. I have to say Carlsberg have done some pretty clever executions over the last couple of years but this is up there with some of the best. Enjoy.

I read a great post on the launch of a new page Facebook has launched called Journalists on Facebook. It is Facebook’s attempt to get more journalists using Facebook rather than Twitter but I have my reservations with this as an overall concept. Firstly, I would like to point out that Facebook is brilliant at what it offers to a page admin because you can share a wider range of content with your likes/followers and you can get statistics from a page through its insights section. Add ...

This is the first of three posts I plan to do on the Premier League’s use of social media. I was doing some desktop research for a client the other day and I came across Man Utd’s Facebook page and I noticed it had more than 11 million likes and it got me wondering what amount of likes the other clubs could get, and whether the real table would reflect my Facebook likes table. So I have completed a review of each of the club’s Facebook pages and sorted ...
